Establishment: Grizzly Peak Brewing Company, Ann Arbor, MI

This is a solid brewpub, but it's nothing to turn cartwheels over. I had their cask-conditioned summer ale and ESB. The summer ale had a pleasing flavor, and the ESB tasted like an ESB, but neither had the aromas typical in cask-conditioned ales. Moreover, both were served far too cold to allow for those aromas to develop. The food and service were fine. Grizzly Peak certainly beats the hell out of Ann Arbor brewing, but does not hold it's own when compared to other brewpubs around the country. It is worth a try if you're in Ann Arbor.

So So So So Great So So Good

Establishment: Arbor Brewing Company, Ann Arbor, MI

I found nothing inspiring about this brewpub. I had a pint of their Hefewiezen and a pint of their cask conditioned IPA. The Hefe, while drinkable, had none of the aromas and flavors that I've come to expect from a good Hefe. The cask conditioned IPA was was acerbic and had none of the west-coast floral hop flavor that they boasted on their menu. The food was fine, but the service was lacking. Finally, they were "out" of almost half of the beers on their menu. I can see running out of a specialty ale, but when a place is "out" of its mainline brews I begin to wonder.
