Awesome! Great Great So So Great

Establishment: O'Reilly's Irish Pub and Restaurant, San Francisco, CA

In general, O'Reilly's is a superb establishment with excellent British-Isles food and an impressive selection of fine beers. The atmosphere, complete with a stunning mural of Irish writers, is first rate. This place is just one step away from being one of the premier drinking spots in San Francisco (if it isn't already_ - but that step involves more consistency with service.

I visited O'Reilly's three times while in San Francisco with my wife. I quickly discovered that one needs to be near the bar to get served in a timely manner. Make the mistake of sitting outside or in a corner and you will not get the time of day. During the first visit, on a Sunday evening, it took me a full thirty minutes to receive my first pint. Once I was finally acknowledged, I enjoyed wonderfully fresh beer (Anchor and Bear Republic) and an excellent lamb shank meal. Wednesday evening we sat at the bar, and then the service was fast and friendly, and I enjoyed the best fish and chips I had in years. On Friday we sat in the corner by the Irish Writers mural and once again getting served was like pulling teeth. In addition, our bill was messed up and we received a check before I was even done drinking. That was also the one time the food fell short - stick with the Irish fare. The calamari was undercooked and limp, and the "sauce" that came with it tasted like an evil mixture of ketchup and blood. Thank goodness the beer was as great as ever and managed to wash it down without incident.

Overall, I would recommend O'Reilly's strongly for its great beer, Irish menu and atmosphere. The servers are all friendly folk but need to work on their peripheral vision.

Establishment: San Francisco Brewing Company, San Francisco, CA

This is not the best brewpub in San Francisco but still makes a respectable product. Their beers are all tasty if a little thin in body, but still very quaffable. The service was a tad slow at first but was very friendly and I received my meal in a reasonable time, which was excellent. It is definitely worth a visit in addition to the other great brewpubs about the city.

Establishment: 21st Amendment Brewery, San Francisco, CA

I almost missed going to this pub and endured a long, crazy ride on the number 15 bus afterwards, but it was well worth it. Their IPA is simply fabulous. They even have a strong "malt liquor" type brew that proved surprisingly tasty. A fine argument against Prohibition!!

Establishment: Magnolia Pub and Brewery, San Francisco, CA

A cozy, friendly brewpub with a psychadelic-art twist in the middle of Haight-Ashbury. A very friendly, attentive staff accompanies excellent food and consistently fine brew. Favorites: Blue Bell Bitter and 710 Ashbury Alt.
