This was worth the 400+ mile road trip. The location is somewhat remote but the scenery is great on the bluffs overlooing the New River. The brewpub is a big wood lodge style structure with two levels of patio with fireplaces. They have a large events room downstairs, and even a butcher counter. I had two beers, a Double IPA and a Cream Lager, both of which were very good.
This scenic brewpub in the valley had 4 standard house beers, 4 seasonals on rotation, and two guest taps. Their Ale of Fergus is a different recipe in each release, an interesting twist to what started out as a 90 shilling Scottish style ale. IPA was good, if a bit sharp. Saisson was very good as a Belgian golden but lacked spiciness. The bar uses the proper glassware for each style. They bought a batch of used mechanics' shirts and sewed the brewpub logo on the back. Overall this is a remote yet high quality operation. Good looking layout, good variety and very good, creative beers. Worth the extra miles.
Called Boylan Bridge, not Sidetrack, this place should open today after a bit of delay with permits and inspections. Very nice neighborhood hangout kind of feel, no TVs planned, thank goodness. Minimal parking matches the cozy inside space. Interesting patio overlooking the RR tracks. The two initial house beers sampled were very good. They plan to use local foodstuffs and keep the menu good and simple. Will update the review after some proper tap time.
My second trip to this place revealed the beer quality to be consistently poor. I suspect they do extract brewing and color or blend from one recipe to fake the darker styles. Too bad; it's a good location and Winchester deserves better. A real brewer is planning to roll out house beers nearby on Cameron Street in May 2009. Go there.
This is not a brewpub as they do not produce on premises. It is a tied house, offering a good variety of the Dogfish head beers brewed in Delaware. Some vintage ales are for sale, a rare if pricey treat. Many of the tap and bottle varieties are not available in the surrounding retail market. Food is good.
From what i could tell this is an all-lager operation, with 5 house beers on tap. The dark pils was an interesting variety; just like it sounds. The seasonal schwarzbier was very good. Excellent BBQ and friendly staff augment the place.
This place has been purchased by the adjoinng Bass Pro Outdoor World and has been renamed Uncle Buck's. They no longer honor the original mug club and will not fill growlers with the old logo. Not that their selections have been particularly growler-worthy lately. Whatever infection it is that gives all your tap lines that carboard off-flavor, they got it.
Hopefully new ownership will get this brewpub back to its proper level of operation.
Based on these other reviews I was prepared to wear my kevlar britches for a visit to Alt Platz. It's a small operation on downtown Portsmouth's main drag. Any food ordered has to survive the trip from the freezer to the microwave or a small pizza oven. The owner had stopped brewing and was serving what he had left in stock, preparing to close completely later in the year. The beers weren't bad, better than average home brew but not good enough to make a regular visitor out of anybody with taste. I didn't catch any gruff from the staff. They had a blueberry wheat that was quoted as 11% abv and a starkbier stated at 13%, both figures clearly double the actual strength. An interesting place, maybe not deserving of complete scorn.
Call to confirm the operating hours as they have a summer schedule different than the website list. It was nice of the employee to let me in to buy a six pack on a day they were nominally closed. This place is a mix of BOP and small brewery. It's a bit cluttered to be a proper pub. The house beers can be good, particularly the strong styles in their premium lineup. Imperial Stout, Scottish Shilling, and Belgian Trippel were all passable.
This place is so beautiful the beer could be an afterthought. Nestled in the Blue Ridge with hop vines spreading over the arbors, this was a worthwhile destination for a long road trip. You could crawl over here from the nearby Appalachian Trail for a mid point pint. The pub has a mix of bar, table, and lounge seating in a large open room. The brewroom resides behind the bar. A tasting patio is outside to take in the views of the hills. The beer was very good, though only one dark variety, a nitro porter, was on tap during my visit. the warm weather was more suited for lighter beers and their pale ale, kolsch, and lager were all delicious and well conditioned. Several varieties available to-go. A beer lover could die, go to heaven, and wind up here for eternity.
Natty Greene's is now bottling several of their house beers for off-premise retail sales, and has tap outlets at some local places. The beer is quite good and the seasonal types can get creative. Had and enjoyed the rye ale. If you're in this area and looking for great bottled beer, go nearby to the Pipe and Pint on Spring Garden Road. Excellent variety of specialty brews from all over. Then go back to Natty's for another draft!
Carolina Brewing has kind of an industrial feel to the decor, quite different from the white linens at Chapel Hill's competing brewpub. They had 7 house beers on tap. I tried two; an IPA and a stout, and found them to be solidly average. Nothing bad, nothing special.
Foothills Brewpub has a lot to offer. The downtown location has a good interior layout. The food is good if a little spendy. Beer is excellent, across the range from pils to stout. Double IPA was bracing for an icy night. The consistently high quality of the beer makes this one of Carolina's finest brewpubs.
Got there near closing time but they didn't rush me out, brewster was cordial and explained the history and operation of the place. Had the marzen which was a little thin in body for the style but if you think of it as a mild session beer it would rate fine. The porter was very good and seemed popular with the locals. North central West Virginia is lucky to have two decent breweries in such close proximity. Must go there in daylight hours next time to enjoy what must be dramatic scenery.
I found the 150 mile trek through the dark and rainy hills worth it to sample solid quality beers at Mountain State. The setting can be called rustic but well suited to the location. The IPA was good, and the cask amber was very good; smooth and well conditioned. Didn't mind the sawhorses. Give these folks credit for running a solid operation in the middle of the state.
I sampled their beer at the Northern Outdoors rafting/outfitters lodge next to the brewery. The beers were solid if not stellar. Five house beers were on tap, nothing too adventurous. Red ale and IPA were good. Give them credit for bringing decent beers to a remote stretch of moose alley.
Rocky Bay has closed, the 7 bbl brewing gear is said to have been bought by a start-up microbrewer in Brunswick. Too bad, as Rocky Bay produced some god beers and was a reliable anchor for the beer scene in the Midcoast area.
House beers have been offline for 6 months, some issue with federal bonding. Restaurant is planning to convert from Italian theme to Cajun. They are hoping to resume brewing. Sad sequence, as the beers used to be quite good and food, prices were excellent.
I stand corrected and apologize for my error. My misinformation came from a garbled phone conversation with the Sparhawk guy when he first started up. I look forward to sampling your beers on my next trip to Maine and welcome you to the great beer scene of that state.
The only bad thing about The Covey is it's 50 miles from home. In spite of the white tablecloths this place is unpretentious, with staff that is friendly and informative without being intrusive. Didn't try the food but the menu is varied, with wild game, steaks, seafood and pizza, all sounding good and at reasonable prices. Beer was very good, especially for an operation only 3 months old. Brewer Jamie is said to have experience at the Blue Star brewpub in San Antonio and a brewing certificate from Germany. Entry level lager was an excellent Munich Helles style, crisp and bright. Two wheat varieties displayed the differences between the Bavarian and American variations. Amber and pale ales were very good in the British style. Rauchbier was mildly smoky, not over-done. All samples were well conditioned and tasty. Pints and sampler trays are $3.75, well priced for high quality brew. The 7 bbl brewhouse sits between the pub and dining room sections of this tastefully decorated wood and stone building. Growlers to-go are restricted by lease terms, too bad. This place has a lot going for it, easily the best brewpub in Texas. Head to The Covey!
This micro is spread out, with a small pub/tasting room attached to the brewhouse and a shipping warehouse across the yard. Quite good beers across the spectrum. The tasting hours are somewhat limited but the people are nice and generous with the samples, or you can buy a pint , growler or bottles. They had two vintages of the OHB barleywine on tap, both tasty and potent. A good place, worth the trip to the middle of Long island.
Gotta love those cans so your beer doesn't get that glassy taste. This medium-sized operation makes very good beer. The canned lager (pils) and amber (steam) are better than average, and the barleywine is superb. Rob Leonard is a gifted and generous brewer.
Only had the Steam beer seasonal which was decent, not stellar. The recent fire on the premises was confined to the roof which is too bad cause a good razing could only improve the ambience. The place is stuck somewhere between hip and grunge. Roll-up garage doors in teh bar facade were a nice touch.
This is a scenic area in the Delaware River valley with a micro just across the bridge in Lmabertville. Triumph had a good variety, with the seasonals being a little better than the normal varieties. Pumpkin ale was good, spiced. Growlers sold. Drink Triumph beer, ride Triumph motorcycles. Be Triumphant.
