Wow! Looks like I have the responsibility of reviewing SanTan first. Thats quite a responsibility!
Decided to check this place out since its the new microbrewery in town. I wasnt very impressed with the beer. They had a stout that didnt have much body and had an odd taste I couldnt identify, and their HopShock IPA was somewhat forgettable. The Oscuro brown beer was worthwhile, but certainly not as good as most of the craft beers you can buy at the supermarket.
The only have four beers, and three guest beers. I felt that was very limited. The bartender told me that they dont intend on having seasonals or specials. Thats really a pity but I guess thats OK if you are into guest beers.
I didnt have the bar food but from what I saw it wasnt worth ordering. It all looked out of a bag or the microwave.
The atmosphere was OK but nothing special. It has that typical old warehouse look but is basically a box in a strip mall. My guess is that the beers will improve because their brewmaster is from Four Peaks. He probably knows what he is doing but may need time to get the processes right. Their selection could use improvement by having some seasonals.
I wasnt impressed enough to come back soon. Better to give them some time to improve.
The stout is more like a porter, and the porter was more like a dark brown, but both were good. I sometimes drop by to see what their seasonals are because those are usually the best. Sometimes the seasonals are great surprises and always at least good. Come in after 10 pm and the beers are cheaper.
Still the best brewery in Arizona. The nut brown is a classic. The free peanuts and popcorn are cool, but the last several times I was there the popcorn was down to the bottom and the bartender was slow to do anything about it. I had to ask several times. In fact the last several times the bartenders were quite unfriendly -- even before I asked them to make more popcorn.
One time they had an Oktoberfest and a Winter Ale that were world class. Haven't seen anything different lately.
Last time I was in Sedona it was 10 pm on a Sunday and they were closed. That's sort of pathetic even for a small town.
The secret to eating at the brewery is that they let you order food to be delivered. That's very cool and is probably why they stopped making their own.
The regular beers range from good to mediocre. They occasionally have some outstanding seasonals. One time they had one called "Fish Ale" that was a prize winner -- and I have been to some big beer festivals.
They have good pizza and overall the food is OK but I wouldn't go there just to eat.
