Great Awesome! Great Good Great

Establishment: Iron Springs Pub and Brewery, Fairfax, CA

Thought I'd give this place a bit more ink. They had 14 house brews on tap on this visit. Would have gone "awesome" on the quality but their Octoberfest was flat and tasteless. The IPA and stout made up for that. Food menu is a little lacking but the quality is there. Was there on a Saturday afternoon and the cyclists were there in abundance. The Albertsons is now gone but the place is easy to find. Just off Sir Francis Drake Blvd. on the downhill side of town.

Tied House San Jose closed in May of this year. Apparently the square footage of the place was its downfall. To much room and not enough customers unless the NHL Sharks were in town. The Mt.View brewpub is still in business.

Establishment: Uncle Billy's Brew & Que Smokehouse & Brewery, Austin, TX

Liked Uncle Billys so much, made sure I went back one more time before leaving town. They had 6 house and 6 guest taps going along with a full bar. Between the two visits tried their Hill Country Amber, Hoptoberfest, Thick Black Smoke and Agave Wit. All great especially the Wit. Food menu is basically choose between 8 BBQ meats and 10 sides in any combo and amount. Awesome food but watch out for the sauce dispensers that have the skull-and-crossbones. Mui caliente! Great atmosphere. Large outdoor patio w/live music. Bar area has roll-up doors when the weather cooperates. Only downside I saw was the parking or lack thereof but they have a shuttle from their lot down the street. Have a chilled shot of the handmade tequila and you won't care.

Disregard the previous review. The dumbass tourist doesn't even know what pub he's reviewing. Sorry 'bout that (512) Brewing. Catch ya next time I'm in Austin.

Made a point of visiting Uncle Billys twice, liked it so much the first time. Had 6 house brews to go along with 6 guest taps. My favorites of their brews was the Agave Wit and the Thick Black Smoke, a dark lager with a great smoky flavor. Good compliment to the meat heavy menu. Basically it's 8 types of BBQ'd meat and ten sides to choose from in any combo and amount you want. Excellent Que! Big outdoor patio with live music and roll up doors in the bar area when the weather cooperates. Big downside is the parking ,or lack thereof. Thay do have a shuttle and plans for a parking garage in the soon-to-be-finished condo complex are in the works. Put this one on your list for sure. And hang around the area for the Congress Ave. bat swarm.

Establishment: Freetail Brewing Company, San Antonio, TX

A fledgling on the scene this place should do pretty well. They had 8 house and 4 guest taps to choose from. Went with a pint each of the Freetail Amber, Hop Brutality and Torper Porter. Excellent in all regards. Food menu does focus on sandwiches and wood-fired pizza but my turkey BLT was great. The downside, if any, is it's about 10 miles north of d'town San Antonio but that seems to be where most of the people live. Listening to the banter on either side of the bar, there's a lot of passion for their craft. Good sign.

Establishment: BJ's Restaurant and Brewery, Webster, TX

Real beer freaks will poo-poo this chain but I've been to half dozen different ones in CA and TX and they are always consistently good. Foods always great. Service is always top notch. Can't beat the abundance of video monitors packed with sports. I was at the Webster,TX location on a Tues. evening and the place was jamming. Say what you will about BJ's, if they're putting butts in the seats they must be doing something right.

Establishment: Two Rows Restaurant and Brewery, Houston, TX

Might have caught them at a bad time but the amber I had was sour. The Vienna lager was much better. The beer menu was a bit depleted. Good food menu. My blackened chicken fettucine was excellent. Small crowd but it was a Tues. afternoon. Located upstairs in the Village Arcade Center near Rice U. Considering the ack of brewpubs in the area, worth a try.

Establishment: McMenamins Blue Moon Tavern and Grill, Portland, OR

After visiting the McMen's "Six Arms" in Seattle had to try another. Could have skipped this one. It's proximity to PG&E Park was my motivating factor. Eight house brews, two guest taps and one each of PBR and Coors Lt to go along with a full bar. Tried three of their beers; the Brown Cow was on it's last leg, the IPA was okay and the Dunkel Stout(nitro) saved the day. Good food menu but the Fish&Chips I had wasn't all that. Really greasy fish and the "chips"aka fries looked like they'd been cooked in 30W Pennzoil. I'd go to another McMen's just to check out the bizarre decor but other places in Portland might be more worthy of your time and money. If nothing else, grab a seat outside and watch the show on the sidewalks.

Establishment: Laurelwood Public House & Brewery, Portland , OR

Another one of those places I wish was`in my area. Closer to the airport than d'town Portland, the customers kept coming in despite it being a Friday afternoon. Can see why after trying a few pints. Seven regulars and three seasonals to go along with a full bar. Four IPAs including the '09 Ntnl IPA Challenge winner, the Workhorse IPA. Had the Free Range Red(organic), Lucky 7 IPA and the Spaced Stout. Excellence all around. The food menu mirrors the beer menu. The free-range chicken breast sandwich gave me a whole new appreciation of the phrase "tastes just like chicken". For entertainment you can sit at the bar and watch the crew back in the brewing area hard at work. And the smell of the place says, "great beer brewed here". Outdoor patio out back. Mechandise and 22ozers of the HopMonkey IPA and Free Range Red available as you exit full and very happy. Put it on your list.

Establishment: Jack's Brewing Company, Fremont, CA

Don't usually do follow-ups but figured Jack's could use the boost. Wish this place was closer to my area. Truly a sports junkies paradise that also puts out great beers. As during my last visit, had the Gridiron Amber, IPA and Penalty Shot Porter. All went down quite well but this time the Porter won out. Wish I would have noticed earlier but they have their Anniversary Ale tipping in at 8.5%. Good excuse to go back soon. The food menu is another great reason to stop in. Lots of variety beyond standard pub grub. The Blackened Chicken/ Sausage Pasta dish I had was excellent. Love the vibe of the place. Casual and friendly. Only knock is the $4.99/pint. But that's still cheaper than the places in The City. Well worth the price.

Good Great Good So So Good

Establishment: Silver Peak Restaurant and Brewery, Reno, NV

Stopped in a couple hours before heading to an Aces ballgame (hot new ticket in town). Just a short drive down and a block off Virginia St. from the strip. They eleven brews listed but were out of the Blonde and their signature Red Roadster. Opted for a pint each of the IPA and Amber. The IPA seemed to lack that traditional bite and the Amber tasted like it was on the way out. The saving grace was the small glass of Vintners Chocolate Stout. The bartender made a point of not overpouring as he looked up to a security camera. "They keep an eye on us". Sweet! Ordered The Santa Fe Chicken Sandwich which, once I finally did get it, was great. Took quite a while considering it didn't seem all that busy. Taking all things into consideration, would imagine making Silver Peak my local watering hole if I lived in the area. Nice rooftop patio.

Establishment: Fifty Fifty Brewing Company, Truckee, CA

Took a couple laps up and down Brockway Rd. to find the place but glad I did. Tip for travelers, if you're in the traffic circle you're close. Even though the place had just opened on a Saturday, the patrons kept rolling in. Good sign. They had five regular and three seasonal taps going along with a full bar. Tried a pint each of the Manifesto Pale Ale and the Trifecta Belgian White. Both were great. Had a Buffalo Chicken Wrap to soak up the suds. Equally great. Ease dropping on the bartender talking to a local, their beef is supposed to be top notch. Food for future thought. Nice open naturally lighted atmosphere with an outdoor patio as well. Short side trip off I-80.

Establishment: Sacramento Brewing Company, Sacramento, CA

A couple changes occured at Sacto Brewing with the start of '09. They've brought in a handful or so of guest beers from up and down the coast such as Bear Republic in Healdsburg and Firestone Walker in Buellton. Nice addition to what was already a strong lineup from their own brews. The other change, to my dismay on a Friday evening visit, they no longer have live music on the weekends. That's a plus or minus depending on the band. The service has been hit or miss the last few times I've stopped in but a free pint on occasion makes "so-so" good.

Great Great Good So So Good

Establishment: Pike Brewery and Pub, Seattle, WA

Definitely in the heart of tourist town. Hard to miss that fact when a pint is fifty cents higher than at Elysians or McMenamins/Six Arms. That being said I still like stopping in when in Seattle. They had nine house taps going with a trio of guest brews to go along with a full bar. Ran through a pint each of the Pike IPA, Kilt Lifter Scotch Ale and the XXXXX Extra Stout. The IPA was excellent and seemed to be the consensus favorite of those at the bar. Sadly, the Kilt Lifter seemed a bit lifeless. On previous visits it's been uplifting. By the time I got to the stout I'd indulged in a side of jalapenos so I was just trying to put out the fire. The food menu is extensive leaning not-surprisingly toward seafood. Had the Pulled Pork Sandwich. Tasty but not a big enough portion to make the usual mess. Downgraded the service because I hate to see my glass sit empty for more than a few minutes especially since it wasn't that busy. Not a major disaster though. It's still worth a visit. And they've got no shortage of "Pike" merchandise.

Establishment: McMenamins / Six Arms Pub, Seattle, WA

Don't know much about the McMenamin "franchise" but I'd go back to this place just for the Bizarroland deco, specifically the "plumbers nightmare" sculptures. The beer menu included nine house brews and three guest taps to go along with a full bar. Went through a pint each of the Hammerhead Pale Ale, the IPA, and the Terminator Stout. No problems with any of them. Had the Stuffed Burger. It was so dark in there(post sunset)couldn't tell if there was anything special in the meat but it was a burger and I was stuffed. It's been a while since I've seen such a friendly staff. Almost like they enjoyed being there. Within walking distance(uphill!) of the Convention Center but you can save the cab fare and jump on most of the Metro buses going up Pike St. That's even more entertainment for tourists and locals alike.

Establishment: Elysian Brewing Company - TangleTown, Seattle, WA

Visited TangleTown on a Saturday afternoon and the place was dead. Guess the locals were home watching the U.of Wash./Notre Dame game. Judging by the neighborhood and the decor, this is more upscale than the Elysian Capitol Hill brewpub. Lots of beers to choose from. Twelve house brews(four were pumpkin based) and a full bar. Went through a pint each of The Wise ESB, Artemus IPA and the Dark of the Moon Pumpkin Stout. All were excellent. The stout was`a little more stout than pumpkin which works for me. Small menu but the Reuben I had was tasty. Could have used a couple more slices of meat but the fries made up for that. Quite a ways from d'town Seattle but worth the visit. For carless tourists like me, you can jump on the #16 bus at the Ferry Bldg. or by the Space Needle. Drops you off right across the street. The Capitol Hill place is closer and their newest brewpub, Elysian Fields, is right across the street from QWest Field.

Heard from my sister, who lives in Elk Grove and has been to the brewpub, that the place had closed down but didn't have any more specifics on it. Happened to be going through the area and decided to swing by. It was` Sunday afternoon and the place was locked up tight with no signs of life. Their website doesn't add any info one way or the other. Just an FYI for fellow beer drinkers.

Great Awesome! Great Great Awesome!

Establishment: Kelly's Brewpub, Albuquerque, NM

If you can't find a beer here you like then you should just stick to Bud. Quite a list of house beers to go along with almost a dozen guest taps. Tried a pint each of the Comets Tail Amber, Scottish Ale and Oatmeal Stout. The amber and stout were decent enough but I'd go back for the Scottish Ale. Great smoky flavor. Ordered a Reuben from the standard pub grub menu. Despite the previous reviewers opinion, thought the corned beef was some of the leanest, best tasting I've ever had. And the side salad actually had more in it than lettuce and a couple tomato wedges like most places. I'm sure Kelly's could be a zoo at times with the U.of N.M. right across the street. I was there about 2pm on a Monday. There might have been twenty people there total;bar area, dining room and patio area combined. Gave the place an "awesome" overall just for the retrofit of a piece of Americana;the car dealership/service bay.Can almost see our ancestors rolling in off Route 66 with steam pouring from under the hood. And wouldn't a cold beer taste good then?!

Establishment: Blue Corn Cafe and Brewery, Santa Fe, NM

Major road construction along Cerillos Rd. made it a pain in the butt finding/getting to the place but very glad I didn't blow it off. A helpful hint in finding it,a strip mall at the NE corner of Cerrilos Rd. & Rodeo Rd. Nice large bar area with plenty of TVs. Service was a little slow to start with but got better. The IPA was down when I ordered so I opted for an Atomic Blond. Not bad. Changed to the End of the Trail Brown Which was more to my liking. Rounded out the visit with a specialty brew, the Marble Red. Very hoppy but great. Based on other reviews, had to try the Carne Adovada. WOW! Worth going there just for the food. And the menu made me wish I'd have had a chance to try a couple other things but such is the downfall of being a tourist. Large, airy dining room. Full bar also.

Being stop #3 on a baseball/brews, couldn't have found a better place to put a tiger in my tank prior to an evening game. The IPA, Red and Porter were great as was the jerk chicken sandwich w/coleslaw. Full bar. Outdoor patio. Friendly staff. Great "jukebox".

Final stop on a baseball/brews vacation. Can't beat the place for proximity to Dunn Tire Park, home of the "AAA" Bisons. Big corner location with multi-levels. Love the old belt-driven fans in the bar area and the black and white photos of Buffalo's history. Tried a pint each of the Trainwreck Alt, Canal Lock Bock and the Street Brawler Oatmeal Stout. No problems with any of the three but liked the Stout best. Being a tourist had to try the spicy Buffalo Wings. Perfect. Not too spicy. Made good use of the packs of Handi-Wipes. Got some weird looks from the staff and a few patrons probably because of my SF Giants t-shirt but felt at home by the second pint. If you have a big group you can order a "widowmaker", a 100 oz. beer tower. Now that's a big pour.

Great Awesome! So So Good Good

Establishment: C'est What?, Toronto, ON

Stop #5 on a baseball/brews vacation. All around pretty nice place. Dining room/ bar in one room and bar/live music(cover charge) in the next room. Pool tables. Full bar. The beer menu had everything covered but I found it a little confusing with every beer a different price. To much math for this tourist. Had the Granite Best Bitter on cask from Halifax then stuck with the homegrown stuff, the Hemp Ale and finished with the St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout from Montreal. Didn't get any extra buzz out of the Hemp Ale but loved the Oatmeal Stout. Ordered the Lambburger from the eclectic menu. About half way through I was wishing I'd have stopped at one of the many hot dog carts around d'town Toronto. Could have taken the bun down the street to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The savior of the meal was the yam frites(aka fries). My first time for yam fries. Viva la difference. Service was okay from my stool at the bar but I didn't get the same good vibe as I did at the Mill St. the day before.

Establishment: Mill Street Brewery , Toronto, ON

Stop #4 on a baseball/brews vacation. Got a seat at the bar about 5pm post-work. Within an hour and a half there was a line waiting on the patio for any table available. The beer was great but I think the location has a lot to do with the popularity. Had a pint each of the Tankhouse Ale, ESB and the Cobblestone Stout. The ESB was really good but I'm a sucker for a good stout. Had the chef's special, Jambalaya, which wasn't all that special. The barkeep, although being fairly busy, took the time to give me a few tips on things around town and the ballpark/environs of Buffalo. Makes for a happy tourist.
