I was at the brewery in July and was kind of let down by the size of the place. The brewpub section is very small, and is incorporated with the gift shop. Upon asking for a certain beer that they have in their selection, I was informed that they were out of it due to their workers being on strike. I was on vacation in the Amana's that weekend and was hoping to purchase some of their line to take back to Dubuque. The strange thing was I found their beer to be cheaper in a local liquor store by my hotel than in the actual brewery. The beer was average, and as I was informed at the brewery, Millstone is the second oldest micro-brewery in constant operation in the U.S., hard to believe.
Back in the days of old the bar calle fat tuesdays was a force in the Dubuque bar scene. Unfortunatly the owners decided to redecorate taking away from the coolness of this establishment. Time was when you could fall from your bar stool at this pub of your own free will. These days the stools have been replaced with tables and chairs. Still a cool hang out. And still good cajun food during the week. Watch the tap beer the lines are not clean however!
I live in Dubuque, and I also know beer this place is good for food upstairs, but bad for the beers they brew. There is no consistancy. One week you will taste one of their brews the next week the same brew will taste different. None of their beers made in house is up to snuff, I think the brew master is asleep at the helm. The bar downstairs the "underground" has half ass service. For Dubuque this is average but the out of towner will be let down.
Pearl Street beers rival that of any and I repeat any microbrew. These guys truly care. The harvest their own hops for pete sakes. Many award winners here. Always a good brew try the oktoberfest brews, unfortunately these are not being served at oktoberfest in La Crosse this year.
Doc Powell's is always a must stop before the maple leaf parade during oktoberfest. The beer selection and quality is not only outstanding but the menu and food quality is unmatched.
