The Blue Hen® Beer Company, Ltd. was founded in 1987 by Jeff Johnson. The company was formed with the mission to develop and introduce craft brewed beers into the Delaware Valley. Blue Hen Lager - Blue Hen Beer is craft brewed from the finest ingredients including roasted barley malts and domestic and European hop varieties. A blend of 6 and 2 row malts are used with three different hop varieties; American Mt. Hood or Cascades, Czech Saaz and Hallertau Hersbrucker. The hops are added in 5 separate additions. The original gravity is 11.8 degrees Plato, the alcohol is 3.9% by weight, the bitterness is 15 units. The style of Blue Hen fits into the Continental Lager classification (i.e. Munich Helles Lager). This combination of exceptional ingredients and use of traditional brewing methods, gives Blue Hen Beer its unique flavor.
Blue Hen Lager was judged in the 1994 World Beer Championships as the World Champion in the Munich Lager Class (number 1 in the class) and awarded 87 points (out of 100 possible) for a Silver Medal overall. Blue Hen Beer was again awarded a Silver Medal in the Munich Helles Class at the 1995 World Beer Championships.
Blue Hen Porter - Blue Hen Porter is a 100% malt brew. The malts are 6 and 2 row pale malt, caramel malt and chocolate malt. The hops are American Cascade and English Kent Goldings. Blue Hen Porter is bottom-fermented, not in the classic English tradition, but in the tradition of US East Coast Porters. The gravity is 14 degrees Plato, the alcohol is 4.5% by weight, the bitterness is 26 units. The flavor is rather intense, rich, malty with a good dose of hop bitterness to balance the flavor.
Blue Hen Porter is currently being used in the Blue Hen Black & Tan production and will be available in bottles in the near future.
Blue Hen Black & Tan - A proprietary blend of our Blue Hen Lager and Porter, Blue Hen Black & Tan offers a mixture of two great products in one. This dark brew is not as heavy and intense as our Porter, but remains full of flavor and character. Gravity is around 12.8 degrees Plato and alcohol is around 4.1% by weight. Blue Hen Black & Tan is a nice, flavorful, malty dark beer.
Blue Hen Black & Tan was awarded a Silver Medal in the 1996 World Beer Championships scoring 88 points out of 100 possible points.
